An eclectic mix of work and life experiences characterizes the works of Walter Sarfatti, a “citizen of the
world” by education, family background, and personal curiosity. Italian-English, of Jewish origin, with strong
ties to Japan, he chose the Tuscan countryside as his retreat. His artistic research, which began during his
studies at the Academy, has moved from oil painting to pastels and then to engraving. Etching and aquatint
are the means of expression used to create his graphic art, whose inspiration goes beyond purely aesthetic
value to address familiar elements reworked through the marks, whose reading can be guided by simple
suggestions: a decomposed leaf, the rust of a nail, a blade of light. The Japanese concept of wabi-sabi
intrigues him in its dimension of aesthetic ideal, philosophical model, and spiritual path that changes the
vision of objects and nature, reworked through an inner experience. It is the search for harmony even in
the most seemingly humble things, leading to the appreciation of beauty, elegance, essentiality, and
everyday life. Elegance and essentiality are two key words in Sarfatti's artistic production, both in his
graphic style and in his choice of colours, which is always very measured and refined, favoring shades of red
and blue.
Finally, his technique shows him to be a master in the use of the press and in engraving plates, often of
considerable size.
He is an artist who suggests, never intrusive, but rather delicate and a spokesperson for the profound
values of sensitivity and attention to his surroundings.
